What is Gridding?
- Gridding is the process of creating a grid that aligns with the 10 x 10 square grids that is common on cross stitch patterns.
- I swear by gridding, because it meant that I didn’t give up on cross stitch projects because of constant miss counting. Don’t get me wrong, I still mess up with gridding, but it’s a lot less.
- I started gridding back in 2018 after finding a YouTube video about it. At the time, the video was already pretty old and I have never been able to find it again. I have some tips and tricks on my Instagram but as visual person, I know that videos are more helpful.
Supplies
- I use Sulky Sliver Metallic Thread to do my gridding. The Sulky website calls it a “thin, flat, ribbon-like foil” thread.
- It lays perfectly on top of the fabric and it’s practically impossible to pierce with a tapestry needle. As you stitch around it, it doesn’t interfere with your stitching and then you remove it from your design when you are finished.
- Other people use a colorful fishing line, a washable marker, or a heat removable pen.

The list below is links from YouTube that are similar to what I do but there are a lot of resources out there.
